Born of an Indian father and a Danish mother in the Italian sector of Quebec’s bilingual city of Montreal cemented the fact that anything Ramachandra Borcar would ever do was destined to be “different”. At the age of sixteen he started playing drums in cult hardcore band Hazy Azure and went on to study classical composition and orchestration which led to his work on original scores for film, television, documentaries (read more about his work as a film composer on Wikipedia, IMDB or thru his Artist Page) and his own solo project Ramasutra. Being an avid collector of rare soundtracks and obscure records made it inevitable that he would also DJ all over the world. His self produced albums soon showed that he was a skilled record producer and eventually had him work on albums by Call Me Poupée, Voivod, Catherine Potter’s Duniya Project and Bulgaqrian gypsy band Lubo Alexandrov’s Kaba Horo.
Due to an un-satisfactory experience with the label that released his debut album “The East Infection”, Ram decided to create Semprini Records and release the follow up on his own label.
“El Pipo Del Taxi” is a five song EP that features instruments and musicians from around the world, electronic beats, analog keyboards and sample collages that once combined, create a genre on its own. All of the tracks were written, arranged and produced by Ram which not only explains the dark and cinematic quality of the album, but the seamless mixing of unrelated styles of music together as well. The album features several guest musicians including Indian slide guitarist Debashish Bhattacharya (Shakti), Sam Shalabi (Shalabi Effect, Kristian/Shalabi/St. Onge, Nutsak) on the oud and the Japanese percussion ensemble Arashi Daiko. The album won a few awards including Canada’s Grafika prize for “Best CD artwork”.
Ram has started work on his next album “La Villa Medusa” but between non-stop film scoring and runnning both Semprini Records and its partner label, Signed By Force, who knows when he’ll have the time to put it out!
